Bangladesh Youth and Cultural Shomiti

The Bangladesh Youth and Cultural Shomiti is a charitable organisation providing lifelong learning and community development activities for people, mainly but not exclusively, of Bangladeshi descent, living in Leicester, helping them to take advantage of the opportunities available within modern society.

Founded in 1974 BYCS has a long and enviable track record of achieving excellence and offering high quality support to its service users. It is one of the longest established BAME community organisations in Leicester.

BYCS’s services are focused in five main areas:

  1. Adult education, learning and training (accredited and non-accredited)
  2. Pre-Employment support and Capacity Building and IAG
  3. Support for children and young people
  4. Services for adult, elderly and disabled people, particularly social welfare and benefit advice
  5. Support services for employers and their workforce.

About our UKSPF project

Positive Communities 2 is a partnership of seven grassroots organisations, namely:

  • Bangladesh Youth and Cultural Shomiti (BYCS)
  • Pakistan Youth and Community Association (PYCA)
  • Shama Women’s centre
  • Somali Development Services
  • Wesley Hall Community Centre
  • Youth Education Project
  • Ethical Business Exchange

Positive Communities 2 aims to provide a range of personalised support services for key target groups to help them address any barriers or issues they have which prevent them from moving from economically inactive to a more active status within the labour market. It will deliver a range of support services in line with those interventions proposed under the UKSPF E33 stream. The project will offer intensive one-to-one wrap around support aimed at those areas with a high percentage of economically inactive Asian females (e.g. Greater Highfields), and other target groups including those who are looking after the home or family, those who are long-term sick or disabled, those who are 50+ and 16-24 year olds.

The service offer will include high quality confidence building skills, Information, Advice and Careers Guidance (IAG), basic skills support (but not maths or English), employability and employment orientation advice and onward progression support to help beneficiaries engage with the benefits system and/or Job Centre Plus and employers.
