RTS switch-off

RTS meter

The Radio Teleswitch Service (RTS) is a radio signal that controls when some types of electricity meter switch between peak and off-peak times. It has come to the end of its useful life and is being turned off by the end of June 2025.

We are asking Leicester residents who still have this type of meter to book their free upgrade to a smart meter with their energy company.

How do I know if I have an RTS meter?

In Leicester around 4,000 homes still have an RTS meter. You might have one if you have electric storage heaters and you are on Economy 7. The photo above shows a typical RTS meter, but there are different types.

In this video on YouTube the TV presenter Lorraine Kelly explains how you can identify if you have an RTS meter and what action you should take to upgrade your meter.

What should I do if I still have an RTS meter?

If you are an RTS customer, your energy supplier may have been in contact to arrange an appointment for a meter upgrade. Please respond and arrange your booking.

If you think you may be affected by the RTS switch-off but you have not been informed by your supplier, don't wait. Please contact them to book an appointment using details from a recent electricity bill, or through the Smart meter website.
