Looking to rent privately?
If you are keen to move as soon as possible, then private renting may be your best option. Waiting times for accommodation on the housing register are very long, whereas private accommodation is usually more readily available.
Private rented accommodation is generally the easiest, quickest, and most convenient route for people to find a home. There’s lots of private lets in Leicester, and there are benefits of renting privately:
- properties are available immediately
- greater choice over where you live if you are looking for a specific area or street
- some properties are available furnished or part-furnished
Where to find private rented accommodation
There are lots of ways to search for and find private homes:
- letting agencies throughout the city
- look online – popular websites include Zoopla, Rightmove and Spareroom, many companies have apps you can download on your phone for free and set up alerts
- local newspapers such as the Leicester Mercury, and notice boards at community centres, libraries, or shops
Our private sector schemes
If you are already on the housing register, you might be eligible for one of our schemes - homes for people in housing need, which could help you overcome some of the financial barriers in finding a private property to rent.
Paying your rent
Rents can vary and you should always check whether you will be able to cover the rent costs before signing for a tenancy.
If you are on a low income you might be able to claim housing benefit to help you pay towards your rent costs. Check the local housing allowance (LHA) to see how much housing benefit you can claim if you are eligible.
