Asbestos
If undisturbed, asbestos is safe to remain in our homes. It is only when asbestos becomes damaged that safety issues arise.
We have an obligation to protect our tenants, employees and contractors from the harmful effects of asbestos, as far as reasonably possible.
To do this, we ensure our properties are surveyed for asbestos when work is required or planned. These surveys are undertaken by appropriately qualified and trained staff.
When we establish there is a need to remove asbestos from a property, we take the necessary safety steps to do this, and replace the item with a non-asbestos product. No new asbestos-based products will be used in future building construction or refurbishment.
Asbestos inspections are also regularly undertaken for all our non-domestic areas, for example, communal areas in blocks of flats.
If you believe you have damaged asbestos in your home or communal area, then please contact your neighbourhood housing officer or, alternatively, contact customer services on 0116 454 1007 or email [email protected]
If you have any further questions or queries, please visit the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.
Asbestos waste
Only cement-bonded asbestos which has been double wrapped in plastic will be accepted at Freemen's Common Household Waste Recycling Centre. A maximum of eight sheets per visit will be accepted. If a van, pick up or car with a trailer longer than 1.4 metres is used to dispose of the asbestos, then a permit is required.
Please call 0116 254 3568 before visiting – asbestos can only be accepted if the container has space for it.
For the disposal of other types of asbestos, please contact a licensed waste carrier to arrange for its safe removal and disposal.
Please note that asbestos is not accepted at the Gypsum Close Household Waste Recycling Centre.
