Accessibility, health and wellbeing

We want to make our services as accessible as possible. We have a range of books and materials in different formats and, we may even be able to bring them to your door if you have difficulties.

Home library service

Do you live in the city and find it difficult to get to the library?

The home library service is free and we can help by:

  • Delivering books to your door
  • Providing access to a wide range of stock including large print, talking books  and books in other languages
  • Exchanging your books for new ones on a regular schedule.

Please contact us to discuss your needs, or if you know someone else who might benefit from this service. You can call us on 0116 299 5465.

If you would like to help by delivering books to people at home:

Large print books

We stock a wide range of large print fiction, biographies and memoirs. These are popular among many of our older members and people with partial visual impairment. We are always updating our stock and try to keep up with popular titles and authors. If you can't find a title you want, ask at your local library; it may be that it isn't available in large print format but you can request that we buy it and we will do our best.

eBooks

eBooks allow users to select their own text size and we are continually expanding our catalogue of titles. If you are considering buying an e-reader to borrow library books you should take a look at our eBooks, eAudiobooks and eMagazines link below or talk to a member of staff, to ensure you get a compatible device.

Audio books

All libraries have a stock of audio books. These are mostly on CD or MP3-CD but there are still some titles available on cassette. Not all players will play books in the MP3-CD format, if your player is compatible it should say MP3 somewhere on it. If you are considering buying a player to use with our audio books, we strongly advise you get one that is MP3-CD compatible.

We also have a growing catalogue of eAudiobooks. These can be borrowed online and downloaded to a compatible device. For further information:

Health and wellbeing

All our libraries have a range of health and wellbeing information including: health awareness events, workshops and relevant books. We offer signposting to other services in the city and our staff can also help you to access health information online. We stock the books from The Reading Well scheme which includes books on prescription, self-help books, feel good fiction and, the most recent booklist, for people with dementia and their carers.
