Advertise on a licensed vehicle
If you wish to have advertisements/signage, such as signs, symbols or flags on a licensed vehicle, you must make a request to us.
What details do I need to send you?
- vehicle licence plate number
- applicant's name and address (must be the same as the licence holder)
- details of the proposed advertisement including its location, colour, size, content, wording etc and include a picture/design of the proposed advertisement
- detailed reasons why the advertising should be granted and any additional information the applicant would like to provide.
What we will consider
We will take into consideration the below points when making a decision to grant or refuse a request:
- Advertisements will be considered around the commercial advertising of a product or service;
- Advertising must not be religious, political or sexual in nature. It should not promote, either directly or indirectly, smoking (including tobacco and/or vaping);
- It should not be likely to cause offence;
- Any advertising must not impede or distract from the signage required by virtue of policy, conditions or legislation;
- The advertising display must be proportionate in size.
- Hackney carriages - no advertising will be authorised on the bonnet or external front doors of the vehicle.
- Private hire vehicles - no advertising will be authorised on the front door external panels.
- Signage that solely advertises a licensed operator, that complies with the above, will normally be granted;
- We may issue a blanket approval for significant national events or celebrations for the carrying of flags/signage for a temporary period.
- Approval may be given for a small religious sign/object that can be displayed within the drivers section of the vehicle but this must be mostly visible to the driver themselves not viewable to members of the public.
- Any authorisation of signage is specific to a specific licensed vehicle and any change of vehicle will require a new application;
Should any approved advertisement come to be in such a condition that, in the opinion of an Authorised Officer, it adversely affects the safety or the appearance of the vehicle, then the vehicle licence will be suspended with immediate effect and until such time that the defect has been rectified.
