Health and beauty registrations
Anyone providing certain health and beauty treatments must register themselves and their premises.
All business providing the following treatments must register their premises and any persons who carry out the treatment(s) at their premises:
- Hairdressing
- Tattooing
- Body piercing
- Acupuncture
- Electrolysis
- Micro-pigmentation.
The requirement to register extends to mobile hairdressers (person registration only), practitioners working from home and chemists and jewellers providing ear piercing.
What happens if I do not register?
Failure to register could result in you being issued with a court awarded fine of up to £1000.
How much does it cost?
The registration fee is a one-off payment unless you employ more staff or move premises.
For all hairdressing registrations the fee is £50 per application.
For all other treatments (acupuncture, cosmetic piercing, electrolysis, semi-permanent skin-colouring, or tattooing) the fees are:
- £120 per premises
- £90 per persons per treatment.
How do I register?
Hairdressing registrations only
You can register your hairdressing business online through My Account using the following link:

Please download and complete the required registration form below and email it to publicsafety@leicester.gov.uk, then make the payment using a debit or credit card by calling 0116 454 3192, 0116 454 3193 or 0116 454 3262 during office hours.
Alternatively, you can print and send the completed registration form to:
Public Safety Team, First floor - Halford Wing, Leicester City Council, City Hall, Charles Street, Leicester LE1 1FZ. After sending the form, make the payment using a debit or credit card by calling 0116 454 3192, 0116 454 3193 or 0116 454 3262 during office hours.
What happens next?
Once your form and fee have been received, an officer from the team may contact you to discuss your application and/or arrange an inspection of your premises. You will be issued with a registration certificate which should be displayed on the premises once the officer is satisfied that you are compliant.
