Cultural Quarter

 

The entertainment begins with a family friendly outdoor festival on Orton Square, featuring live music, dance displays and other activities. With its theme of ‘Kings & Queens of England’ to herald the forthcoming celebrations of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the festival promises entertainment for all the family with evening events to keep the party going.

 

Historical and themed street arts and walk-about characters will be in and around The Cultural Quarter throughout the day.  See if you can spot Liz and Walt on stilts, King Henry VIII, St. George and Sylvesta the Jesta.

 

All events are free unless otherwise stated.

Family Day Launch

Event launch by The Lord Mayor with a performance by the Leicester Morris Men.

 

12noon – 3.00pm

Bill Brookman & Friends

Children’s activities, circus skills, St. George theatre, music and mirth with lots of things to make and do.

 

12noon – 5.00pm

Genii Productions Arts Tent

Visit the special St. George's Day Art Café with activities including making your own peg dolly puppet or a King/Queen/St. George/dragon. Also try your hand at making a 3D optical illusion dragon. During the day, look out for our giant Genii Dragon roaming Orton Square and St. George and the Genii Knight on stilts.

 

12.15pm

Jewellers Eye Band

Opening the main stage will be popular Leicester band Jewellers Eye. Fiddle driven songs from this folk five piece.

 

1.15pm - 1.45pm

Maypole Dancing Sessions

A fun opportunity for families to ‘have a go’ and join in with traditional maypole dancing.

 

2.00pm

Leicester Morris Men & Street Arts Display

 

2.30pm

Maypole Dancing Sessions

Last call for families to ‘have a go’ and join in with traditional maypole dancing.

 

3.00pm

Knight’s & Princess’s Parade for The King & Queen

A fancy dress parade for children dressed as Knights and Princesses, with prizes for the best outfits on the day. To enter, please go to the Information Point on Orton Square by 2.45pm.

 

3.45pm

Parade Prize Giving & Dragon Hunt Prize Draw

 

4.00pm

Red Fox Ceilidh Band - Folk Dancing Finale

Red Fox Ceilidhs will fill Orton Square with traditional dancing to a live band. Suitable for all ages and no experience necessary, caller Ben Robinson will talk you through the steps.
