Office and phone line closures during festive bank holidays

Our offices and phone lines will be closed between 25-27 December and 1 January. For emergencies please check our out of hours numbers.

Food hygiene and safety

All food businesses are legally obliged to register with us before opening. We inspect all food premises and rank them using the national food hygiene rating scheme.

There is no charge and the registration cannot be refused. Once registered it is not necessary to re-register, unless there is a significant change in the business (such as a name change, or change of food business operator).

Food hygiene inspections

Environmental health officers may inspect food premises without having to make an appointment or giving advanced notice. The frequency of our visits depends on:

  • Type of food being handled
  • People at risk
  • How the business is managed
  • The condition of the premises
  • Any complaints that we have received.

We will rate your premises using the national food hygiene rating scheme.

Food hygiene training

All food handlers should gain a level 2 certificate in food hygiene (formally a basic food hygiene certificate). Food business establishment operators are also required to receive adequate training in Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP). Find out how to manage the food hygiene and safety procedures in your food business - FOOD.GOV.UK.

Producing food of animal origin

You will need approval from us if your establishment produces and sells foods of animal origin to other businesses. These products include meat products, minced meat and meat preparations, dairy products, fishery products and egg products.
