The City Council is constantly striving to keep the area in which you live as clean and safe as possible. To achieve this, we would like to ask for your co-operation in keeping your wheelie bin on your property at all times, unless you are awaiting a collection.
Bins left on the footways;
-
May cause an obstruction to disabled and infirm people, especially those who are blind, partially sighted or are wheelchair users.
-
Create difficulties for parents and carers walking with young children and pushchairs – the footpath is narrowed by the bins left out and leaves people less room to walk safely away from the road.
-
Interferes with cleansing staff’s street sweeping duties, resulting in a reduced effectiveness of this service.
-
Look unsightly.
-
May be vandalised or set fire to.
-
May be stolen.
Your wheelie bin should be placed on the footway either on the morning it is due to be emptied, or if this is inconvenient, no earlier than 7pm on the evening before collection. Your bin must be back on your property as soon as possible after being emptied, no later than 7am of the day following your collection.
If an accident occurs as a result of your refuse bin being left out on a non-collection day, then YOU, and not the Council, are liable.
If you have difficulties moving your bin on and off your property, you may be eligible for an assisted collection. Please call our Customer Service Line for advice on 252 7002. If your bin or recycling box gets damaged or goes missing please contact the Customer Service Line on 0116 2527002 to request a replacement.
If you do leave your bin on public land other than the times specified in this letter you could be subject to formal enforcement action. You may already be complying with our request for residents to keep bins off the streets, in which case we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for helping keep your neighbourhood clean and safe.
Since April 2010 the Wardens have been working with communities to address bins being left out on residential streets as a result of the work 5026 bins have been removed. the table below shows how many bins were left out on the street after each stage on engagement by the City Wardens. this four stage approach has ensured more engagement with residents, advise being given and as a result less enforcement needed.
Residents who have chosen to ignore advice and remove there bins have been issued with a fixed penalty notice.
