Black History Month returns for its 30th year
October 2017 will mark the 30th Anniversary of Black History Month (BHM) nationally.
Here in Leicester, we will take this opportunity to recognise the contributions of Leicester’s African and African Caribbean communities, particularly over the last three decades.
There is a varied programme of music, poetry, comedy, literature readings, film and theatre throughout the month. BHM Leicester will be launched by Serendipity-UK, with its centrepiece the Lost Legends Exhibition at Newarke Houses Museum and Gardens.
Lost Legends remembers and recognises those who have contributed to the development of Black history through avenues such as arts, culture, sports and education. For more information, call 0116 257 7316 or visit the Serendipity website.
Other events taking place throughout BHM 2017 include BHM Film Fest at Phoenix Leicester, which features a collection of films that shed light on Black history, and the struggles and achievements of major historical figures. Visit the Phoenix Leicester website for more information.
No festival would be complete without excellent food, and BHM2017 is no different. LCB Depot will be serving up Soul Food at its canteen space on Friday 27 October, along with performances from DJs, street performers and musicians.
